Tales from the Townhouse
Discover our past residents
Our hotel has a story to tell. We were originally a row of seven townhouses. Architects, surgeons, musicians, entrepreneurs and barristers walked our corridors. They called our building home. They witnessed births, deaths and the odd scandal or two. Each townhouse has its own tale to tell. Each shaped the history of the building which we know as the Francis Hotel Bath.
Townhouse No. 6
A house of healing and happy noise
For more than forty years, this was the family home of surgeon Richard Thomas Gore and his wife, Louisa. Within these walls, they raised four children, teaching lessons around the table and filling the rooms with chatter and discovery. By 1884, the central five houses of the square had joined as one and opened their doors as a hotel. From healing hands to welcoming rooms, a spirit of care has always lived here, just as it does at the Francis Hotel today.
