Tales from the Townhouse
Discover our past residents
Our hotel has a story to tell. We were originally a row of seven townhouses. Architects, surgeons, musicians, entrepreneurs and barristers walked our corridors. They called our building home. They witnessed births, deaths and the odd scandal or two. Each townhouse has its own tale to tell. Each shaped the history of the building which we know as the Francis Hotel Bath.
Townhouse No. 7
From an apothecary’s door to a hotelier’s welcome
In the late 1700s, this house was home to Mr. Crooks, an apothecary and chemist, whose door was always open to the community. In 1808, a month-old baby was left in the passage, the household took her in, offering safety and care. By 1861, the Horton sisters were welcoming travellers as a lodging house, with warmth and a clean bed. By 1884, No. 7 had become part of the growing Francis Hotel, carrying forward the same welcoming spirit that we still stand by today.
